(2018, SAGE) by Creswell & Plano Clark is now in its 3rd edition.
In this chapter, the general design of the research and the methods used for data collection are explained in detail. The first part gives a highlight about the dissertation design. The second part discusses about qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. The purpose of this section is to indicate how the research was conducted throughout the study periods. Research designs are plans and the procedures for research that span the decisions from broad assumptions to detailed methods of data collection and analysis.

The essence of research design is to translate a research problem into data for analysis so as to provide relevant answers to research questions at a minimum cost.
